More on the Afghan mercenaries who where running their own jail, from the New York Times. Behold, spreading Democracy in action:
'Idema claims that he was operating on orders from the Pentagon: "We were in direct daily contact – by fax, e-mail or telephone – with the office of Defense Secretary Rumsfeld."'
'The government in Washington has vehemently denied these claims, and Idema, a former soldier with a noticeably military demeanor, has yet to provide evidence to support his claims. However, the US military in Kabul has been forced to concede that private mercenaries have been assisting regular American forces in their hunt for supporters of Osama bin Laden. Idema has delivered a prisoner to American forces "in at least one instance," says US military spokesman Major Jon Siepmann. "We receive prisoners from a large number of sources."'
A large number of sources, eh? It does make one wonder who exactly is out there arresting people in the name of lady liberty. Not to mention those doing the arresting aren't bound by the same legal standards as U.S. regular forces.
