Like Andrew and most other people in the country I too am reeling from the latest scandal coming from Iraq. The photographs are shocking, but so too is a lack of admission by most Americans, including the administration, the Democrats, most in the media that in these heinous acts, our entire society needs to be indicted. President Bush was too quick to distance himself, distance everybody not directly involved from the atrocities committed in Abu Ghraib. There in the desert we show the world the most horrific examples of freedom without restraint, and have in the process birthed an entire new generation of potential terrorists. And yet, as unspeakble as these acts are, people we know and care about committed them. These aren't hardened criminals, these are our neighbors friends and family, the patriots, the few willing to actually do something about their beliefs in the United States and what it stands for.

If they can fall so easily, what does it say about everybody else? Take a look at how we have responded for a clue. First, we are shocked and apalled. Then we justify the acts. They were under immense pressure in a battlefield, "letting off steam" as Rush Limbaugh says. Seymour Hersh and the Washington Post who have done the most to break the story imply it was a conspiracy involving nameless, faceless Military Intelligence agents, and equally nameless senior officials in the Pentagon and White House. Military personnel are quick to point out the lack of leadership and a breakdown of authority. Those most directly implicated again point to nameless officials from shady intelligence organizations authorizing or encouraging or preventing them from stopping the acts. Democrats are quick to point to Donald Rumsfeld and George W. Bush, and though I haven't seen it yet, I'm sure it won't be long until Republicans blame it on Hollywood and their Kerry supporting liberalism.

While all of these may have some measure of truth and bear some culpability, they all also share one other thing in common and we should take careful note of this: as everyone seems to imply that had they or most other Americans been in the same situation, these things wouldn't have happened. Perhaps in this, Rush Limbaugh in his casual reference to torture as stress relief is closest to the disturbing truth that we are all trying to avoid.

As Walt Kelly said during the Vietnam era, "we have met the enemy, and he is us."
