a small idea:
Something I was thinking about today to improve the effectiveness of U.S. troops. I suggest that all new recruits to the Army be divided into ten groups. The group assignments would be random. Each group would be assigned a language to learn, the DoD could re-evaluate which languages were most useful every five or ten years, but the idea is to have each group focus on one of the languages for two years academically, and then serve in assignments which use the language for two (or so) years. I think something like this would go a long way towards increasing preparedness for dealing with various hotspots around the world. For instance, the ten languages I'd be teaching now would be Arabic, Chinese, Korean, French, Spanish, German, Pashtun, Russian, Swahili, and perhaps Farsi. Anyway, the training would be compulsory and everyone would have to achieve a certain level of proficiency to advance rank. We should never have a military that's as devoid of linguistic knowledge as ours is today, it's a basic flaw that can be easily exploited.
