The New Yorker has a good article this week on Dick Cheney's influence and connections with the folks who are rebuilding Iraq. All of this is fine and stinky, but the Node continues to wonder; what happens the day that soverignty is transferred to Iraqis? What if they decide that Halliburton is no longer necessary? That is a distinct possibility, as these contractors are just as present and visible as the U.S. government in Iraq. Needless to say, I wonder if there's a clause in these contracts that takes into account the possible financial losses these companies will incur if the new government of Iraq cuts the umbillical cord, and if there is such a thing I wonder if the U.S. taxpayer would be financially liable for those losses.
