There is a particular bit of logic floating around that seems to me to be faulty. An example:
'In Selma, Ala., firefighter Thomas Wilson supports going to war with Iraq, and brings up Sept. 11 himself, saying we don't know who's already here in the US waiting to attack. When asked what that has to do with Iraq, he replies: "They're all in it together - all of them hate this country." The reason: "prosperity."'(via This Modern World, from an article in the Christian Science Monitor.)
Do terrorists hate the U.S. because the U.S. is prosperous? History shows us otherwise; that "terrorists" come from all walks of life. They could be extremely rich (I think most people in the U.S. would be envious of the millions that Osama Bin Laden or Saddam Hussein have) or very poor or anywhere in the middle. Terrorism is almost always a political tool to draw attention to a particular issue, not a blanket hatred of prosperity, and defeating terrorism will require much more than dismissing it with simple arguments such as this.
