Thought for Friday: I don't think there's any way around it now -- President Bush and his Administration lied to the American people. It sucks to be lied to by your President, even if he may have some good reason for it. I suspect that there are a lot of people who don't care (or are having a bout with cognitive dissonance) because they a.) think Bush is "inspired" and as such would support his actions whether or not he lied, b.) feel the humanitarian case for ousting Saddam is more important to them than the weapons case, or c.) feel that since troops are on the ground in Iraq, questioning the operation is the wrong thing to do right now.
Nevertheless, Bush lied, his advisers lied, and we as a country are going to have to deal with it. This so-called "September Surprise" will mean nothing if there's no outstanding physical evidence of the existence of WMDs. The U.S. case before the U.N. (as stated in resolution 1441) relies on there being physical weapons that posed a threat to the U.S., if none can be produced then the simple fact is the U.S. lied to the U.N. and should be punished accordingly. This is similar to the judge in Alabama who has been ordered to remove the 10 Commandments monument from the foyer in the courthouse. What he's doing is illegal, no matter how you feel about the 10 Commandments. Compliance with the law is a necessary part of being a citizen of the U.S. and, for that matter, the world.
