The Washington Post reports that Army Gen. John Abizaid, the new commander of ground forces in Iraq, acknowledged that the opposition to U.S. troops does indeed appear to be organized (see L. Paul Bremer's comments on the same situation below). He does not state that the Baathist insurgents are cooperating with the other groups, but that mid-level personnel in the former intelligence service and the Special Republican Guard are organizing some of the attacks as part of a larger guerilla war effort. Again, it remains to be seen if indeed these forces are cooperating with other forces fighting the Americans and Brits in Iraq.
