Seymour Hersh is back with a great article about Syrian attempts to help U.S. intelligence agencies with their fight against Al-Qaeda. The article is full of gems, specifically we like the discussion about Hezbollah in Lebanon. The reason we like it is because it addresses the question "when does a "terrorist" organization cease being terrorists and becomes a legitimate opposition party?" The U.S. has a history of bungling its choice of "terrorists" to ally with, almost always picking the least-democratically minded group to side with (i.e., the Shah of Iran, Augusto Pinochet, Jonas Savimbi, etc...). This failure plagues U.S. policy to the point that it's responsible for a number of the troubles the U.S. faces in the world. This happens when those who make decisions choose to ignore the advice of professionals in the field -- i.e. intelligence specialists, professors, etc.
