Correction: the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act is the specific piece of offending legislation. Below we stated that it extended the copyright for 75 years. This, obviously, would put "Steamboat Willie" into the public domain this year and is an error -- the Sonny Bono act extends corporate copyrights to 90 years, thus ole Willie won't go public until 2023 or so. It varies a bit depending on the type of copyright, too; individual copyrights are extended to life of owner plus 70 years, for instance. Either way, the Act damages the public domain and thus we plan several protest actions throughout the year to coincide with the Disney focus on Mickey...
'Quick thought; I just saw a lede on the LA Times website about Disney's plans to hype the mouse (Mickey, that is), in celebration of his 75th birthday. May I suggest that we also take the opportunity to protest the extension of copyrights to 75 years -- Mouse or no Mouse, the U.S. thrives on public domain (see Linux) and the extension of copyrights directly threatens the concept of a public domain.
