The Washington Post has an update on the faked Niger documents which were cited by Bush to support the assumption that Iraq had an active nuclear weapons program and was looking to buy enriched uranium. The story is about a CIA report in 2002 saying that the documents were faked and the transaction didn't happen. Somewhere in transit the report was changed to say that the CIA spoke with Niger officials who denied the allegations, instead of citing the original sources (which included a former U.S. ambassador). Aside from providing an update on the probe into the document, the WP story highlights the differences between folks in the CIA -- this particular incident suggests that someone sympathetic to the goals of the Administration within the CIA changed the report before passing it on. This certainly wouldn't be the first time that's happened -- again, if we go back to the Nixon and Ford administrations there was a dichotomy between those who gathered intelligence and those who presented it to the higher-ups.
