A couple of fun items from the BBC World Service this morning; first, Iran recently announced that it has discovered deposits of uranium. Second, NATO vetoed a U.S. plan to protect Turkey in the case of a war against Iraq. Of the two, the second will probably get the most press this morning (it'd already made the New York Times website as of 2:00 AM PST) although the first is what should cause the most concern. Pakistan and Iran - there's a fun thought, considering Pakistan's history of sharing its know-how with others (notably North Korea). Third, several countries are proposing a more substantial inspection regime -- not only would it triple the number of inspectors in Iraq, but it would back them up with U.N. troops. At this point it's important for the anti-war set to put forward concrete plans for accomplishing the same goals that a U.S. war with Iraq would accomplish. It's one thing to oppose war, but it's another to propose viable alternatives that would achieve the desired effects. Hopefully we'll see more of this kind of thinking.
